Venice is a beautiful place, and I will admit that I was in fact a tourist traveling in Venice while writing this article. I suggest that instead of feeling guilty about your decision to go, be careful and conscientious of the types of things the tourists do that locals typically resent. Do your effort to be a sustainable tourist in Venice — support locally-owned businesses, walk attentively and with alacrity, and leave as little a footprint as possible in your methods of transport. The more locals who move out, the less incentive Italy has to keep Venice above water.
